How does your business handle waste?
Digital Waste Tracking readiness — FAQs
- When does Digital Waste Tracking become mandatory?
- Waste receivers (permitted sites) must use Digital Waste Tracking from October 2026 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and January 2027 in Scotland, submitting each receipt within 48 hours. Carriers, brokers and dealers come into scope from October 2027.
- Who does Digital Waste Tracking apply to first?
- Waste receivers — the operators of permitted or licensed sites that accept waste — come into scope first, from October 2026. Carriers follow a year later in October 2027.
- How do I know if I'm ready for Digital Waste Tracking?
- You're ready if you already capture each waste movement as a structured digital record with valid EWC codes, quantities, carrier details and (for receivers) disposal or recovery codes — in a format that can be submitted to the service. Paper notes and spreadsheets are not.
