HP 1

Explosive

Hazardous property HP 1

Waste that can cause dangerous chemical reactions, producing gas that can damage surroundings (e.g., pyrotechnic or self-reactive waste).

What does HP 1 mean?

HP 1 (Explosive) is one of the 15 hazardous property (HP) codes used to describe why a waste is hazardous. Where an EWC code says what a waste is, HP codes classify the danger it poses. When you record hazardous waste — on a consignment note or in the Digital Waste Tracking service — you give both the hazardous EWC code (marked with an asterisk) and the HP codes that apply.

Hazardous waste (an EWC code ending in *) must move on a hazardous waste consignment note, kept for at least 3 years — not an ordinary waste transfer note.
